First you need to be very clear as to your needs/ wants from your potential employee. Be clear with yourself on your priorities, desires and expectations. It will benefit you tremendously if you spend the time thinking this through.

For example if your needs are promptness and punctuality be direct and state to the potential employee these are my top priorities.

Be mindful you are looking for competency and compatibility and ask yourself is this person able to perform the functions of the position effectively and is this person able to relate effectively with colleagues and customers/clients. Ask what they liked and disliked about their work experiences and why they left a previous position. Ask about their successes and challenges and how they dealt with them.

I recommend having the potential employee meet the entire team individually and listen to their feedback and then decide if you think it is a good hire.

When checking references do not forget to ask about your priorities what is most important to you!

If still feeling unsure have a trial period to make sure both parties are satisfied with the arrangement.

Most importantly know what you are looking for!
