Presentation: May 30th, 2014  New York State Career Development Association Buffalo New York

Title: Talking at Cross-purposes? Intergenerational Communication in the Workplace.

Content: Summary – Overview of communication styles between the generations: Traditionalists (1900-1945); Boomers (1946-1964); Generation X (1965-1981); Generation Y or Millennials (1982-1995); Linksters (born after 1995). While there has always been multiple generations in the workforce, this is the first time that there are five generations in the workforce.

This can presents many challenges in the workplace for individuals:  For example,

How can you recognize the different styles of communication within your  department or organization?

How can you best  monitor and regulate your own reactions to the different communication styles without become defensive or offended?

How can you respond to  different communication style as well as respond in a manner that conveys authenticity and respect?

We all need to have effective and have respectful communication between the different generations to promote a fulfilling and healthy workplace.

Coaching and awareness around this topic is essential in today’s workplace to be able to reach one’s potential. – How to Manage Older Tech Workers, July 10, 2014
